Why Malawi is considered a fragile / “failed state” candidate.

Malawi exhibits chronic structural vulnerabilities: weak state capacity, limited fiscal space, and high dependence on external aid. Many regions are poorly integrated into national systems, and public service delivery is uneven.

The country is highly exposed to climate shocks (droughts, cyclones) that undermine agriculture — the backbone of the economy — and displace populations.

Governance issues such as corruption, institutional inefficiency, and lack of robustness in public financial management further weaken the ability to respond to crises or sustain development.
